wasp.jpgTermico Technicians can identify wasp species and have the necessary chemicals and equipment to safely and effectively treat wasps and their nests.

Why are they considered to be pests?

While wasps play a useful role in the environment they can inflict very painful stings. Paper wasps are quite common around properties and can sting repeatedly if disturbed. European wasps are particularly dangerous as they will attack en-masse. Do not approach a suspected European wasp nest.

What can home owners do to control them?

Residual surface sprays will repel wasps but it is practically almost impossible to effectively treat every potential site and prevent them from nesting somewhere on the property. Control generally involves treating the wasps when they become established. Eradication of paper wasps is not difficult to achieve if access allows, however protective clothing and personal protective equipment is required to prevent being stung in the process. Treatment is best carried out near dawn or dusk when all individuals are likely to be in the nest. Do not approach a suspected European wasp nest.

Wasp Facts

Wasps are insects belonging to the order Hymenoptera (membrane wing) along with bees and ants. Some of them are solitary while others live in colonies of up to thousands of individuals. Most wasps are parasitic but some have developed a venomous sting which they use to paralyse their prey. They provide a minor role in the pollination of flowers and are useful in the control of insect pests. Those that sting however can be annoying pests themselves, particularly when they make their nests around homes.

Identifying Wasps.

Paper wasps are the common species found around our homes. The European wasp is a foreign invader and when identified should be reported to the Department of Agriculture.
