February the 14th is fast approaching and while St. Valentine is widely known as the patron saint of love and happy marriages, you may be surprised to know he was also the patron saint of beekeepers!
As the patron saint of beekeepers he was charged with ensuring the sweetness of honey and the protection of beekeepers.
These days love and honey come hand in hand as more and more people are turning to backyard bee keeping. The growing interest in beekeeping across Perth comes amid a trend to growing and eating healthy local food as well as increased awareness of the importance of bees to the planet.
Over the years we have become more aware of the ecological importance of bees. They play a vital role in creating a healthy environment. Bees are perfectly adapted to pollinate, helping plants grow, breed and produce food. They do this by transferring pollen between flowering plants.
In Australia it is said that two-thirds of the food we consume is reliant on pollination from bees.
Bees are normally very placid insects however when they feel threatened they can give a painful and potentially fatal sting for those allergic to bees. This means that often bees are seen as a pest and people prefer to keep them away from their homes and gardens.
With the number of beekeepers in Perth on the rise, they are not short of homes. Therefore if you require bees removed from your home contact a professional beekeeper or local Pest Control company to come and relocate them.
At Termico Pest Management we work with a number of Perth’s local beekeepers when relocating bees and even have a couple of beekeepers on our team. Therefore wherever possible we will be sure to find them a safe home to live out the rest of their days!
