Finding Scorpions

22 Mar. 2016

This West Australian Scorpion was found in very close proximity to children, yesterday!

Scorpions are a type of arachnid. They're usually found under rocks or logs but sometimes they can creep in a little too close for comfort. Like this guy.

They are largely nocturnal and can grow to a massive 12 cm's long. The larger, more venomous scorpions are usually found in Northern Australia.

They are useful in their environment because they eat other creepy creatures that we don't like for example; cockroaches, spiders, slaters, beetles, centipedes and is one of the few things that will eat those pesky millipedes.

Australian scorpions can give a painful sting. This can cause inflammation and pain for several hours.

First aid for a scorpion sting isn't that elaborate - just a cold pack and paracetamol. It's important to seek medical attention and it's a good idea to keep the scorpion for identification purposes. (That's if you haven't freaked out too much and its now in squished pieces all over the floor!)

Hopefully you call us to treat your home for pests like scorpions before anyone gets hurt.

Annually, over 20,000 West Australians trust us to keep their homes safe from Pests.
