Rat problem?

30 Jun. 2016

Around the world, rats and mice are known to spread over 35 diseases that can infect both people and pets, including E. coli and Salmonella.

There are many ways disease can be spread. Such as the obvious direct contact when the rat can bite or scratch causing a terrible fever. But also the mess they leave behind can cause diseases like leptospirosis, which can result in liver and kidney damage.

Even when rats have been exterminated they can continue to spread disease. Dead rodents should be carefully removed by a professional from areas where your family, your pets or native animals could come into contact with them.

Disease from rats is spread by;

  • direct contact such as rat bites
  • unsafe handling and disposal of infected dead rats
  • eating food or drinking water contaminated with: rat urine, faeces, saliva, hair
  • breathing dust contaminated with the urine and faeces of infected rats.
  • transferred indirectly by ticks, fleas, and mites that live on infected rats.
  • Rats are very adaptable public health pests. They are not fussy eaters and can make themselves at home in your house, your shed, your garage and your garden. As well as causing unpleasant odours and damage to property and possessions.

Our photo illustrates where rats have damaged an air conditioning pipe which now needs replacing. They can gnaw through most construction materials weakening building structures - even gnawing through lead and aluminium sheeting. Rats chewing through electrical wiring, can start fires by shorting-out appliances or lighting fixtures.The cost of rat damage can escalate rapidly.
