Spider Control Tips For Your Home

1 Nov. 2018

Spiders are natural predators of insects and some people are quite happy to have them around the home. For most of us though they are unwelcome guests; their webs can be unsightly, they cause fear and some of them are genuinely dangerous to our health.

Pyrethroids are synthetic copies of the natural pyrethrums derived from chrysanthemum flowers and  are commonly used to kill or repel spiders but there are some things that home owners can do to reduce spider numbers without using pesticides:

Red back spiders in particular love to live amongst rubble on or near the ground. Old car tyres, stored bricks and tiles also provide them with a perfect home.

Choose lighting that is less likely to attract insects in and around your home
Spiders, like us all need a food source to survive, by attracting less insects to your home provides spiders with less feeding opportunities. Avoid having porch lights on unnecessarily and close blinds & windows at night to prevent light from escaping.

Establish bird attracting gardens
There are many small birds that will feed on spiders and they can be very effective in reducing spider numbers.

Install screens and seal any gaps around the home
Most spiders much prefer to live outside but they will enter houses through small gaps around windows and doors. .
