Spiders are fascinating creatures, but having them invade your home can be an unwelcome experience for many. During the warmer months especially, Perth homeowners tend to discover more spiders in and around their homes as they become more visible while searching for food, mates and suitable shelter.
There are a few things you can do however to help prevent spiders from entering your home;
Keep a Clean and Clutter-Free Home
Spiders are attracted to cluttered and dusty areas, as they provide hiding spots and potential prey. Regularly declutter your home, especially in storage areas, basements, and roof spaces. Vacuum and dust frequently to eliminate spider webs and their potential food sources.
Seal Entry Points
Inspect your home for any cracks, gaps, or openings that spiders can use to enter. Pay close attention to windows, doors, vents, and utility openings. Seal these entry points to prevent spiders from finding their way inside.
Remove Outdoor Debris
Spiders often make their way indoors from outdoor spaces. Keep your garden tidy by removing piles of leaves, woodpiles, and other debris that can serve as hiding spots for spiders. Trim back vegetation and bushes that are close to your home's exterior to reduce the chances of spiders finding their way inside.
Install Screens and Door Sweeps
To prevent spiders from entering through windows and doors, install screens on all windows and ensure they are in good condition. Additionally, consider installing door sweeps to seal the gap between the bottom of your doors and the floor, preventing spiders from crawling in.
Use Natural Repellents
Certain scents and substances are known to repel spiders. Consider using natural repellents such as essential oils like peppermint, tea tree, or citrus. Dilute a few drops of these oils in water and spray the mixture around windows, doors, and other potential entry points to deter spiders.
Reduce Outdoor Lighting
While spiders themselves are not attracted to light, many of the insects they feed on are, which can inadvertently draw them closer to your home. Where possible keep outdoor lighting fixtures away from entrances to minimise the chances of spiders being lured inside.
Regularly Inspect and Clean Storage Areas
Spiders often seek refuge in storage areas such as roof spaces, basements and garages. Regularly inspect these spaces and remove any spider webs or egg sacs you come across. Keep storage items elevated and organized to minimize potential hiding spots for spiders.
By carrying out these tasks you can significantly reduce the number of spiders taking up residence in your living space. However we appreciate that everyone leads very busy lives and it can be hard to keep up maintenance around the home and that clutter can quickly build up. Therefore to help you, you can always contact a pest control professional to help keep the spiders at bay!
