We’re not the only ones becoming more active as the weather heats up in Perth! During the warmer months, many of Perth’s most common pests become more active too as they search for food, water and shelter from the heat. As a result, you may find yourself encountering them in and around your home more often.
Spider numbers usually increase over the summer months because the insects they prey on become more numerous. Homeowners will notice spiders and their webs around their properties, especially around eaves, gutters, fence capping and stored items.
Most species of spiders found in WA are considered almost harmless, but the Redback spider is one to be wary of. While a bite in unlikely to be fatal, the female Redback can deliver a very toxic and painful bite that can leave you feeling very unwell. Black house spiders, although not as dangerous as Redbacks, can also deliver a painful bite and they build messy webs around gutters and fence capping that can make a property look very untidy.
Ants are another common pests that tend to cause distress during the summer months. They are also one of the most difficult pests to control. Their biology and subterranean existence equips them superbly well for survival. Coastal brown ants cause the most problems around homes, undermining paving and sometimes entering homes, seeking food, moisture and shelter.
Depending on the species there are likely to be less than 5% of the colony above ground at any time, and it is for this reason that commonly used repellent pesticides are only temporarily effective. Most of the colony will remain safely underground and relocate or just resurface a few weeks after the treatment. Therefore with any ant treatment, while it may improve your ant issues you won’t always be able to eradicate them completely.
Cockroaches can spread a range of bacteria and disease and they come out in force during the summer months. They will often be found around areas where they can easily access food sources such as around bins, food preparation areas and pet feeding bowls. Even dishwashers are hot spots for this creepy crawly.
During the warm sunny days of spring you will often see flying termites around. Flying termites are called alates. They’re actually the same species of termite that live in the dark damp underground, however the reproductive members of the colony wait for warm humid spring days so they can emerge and start seeking out a mate. These emerging alates are the potential Kings and Queens of new colonies. Termites are a big concern for home owners. While they may be small, they are considered to be one of the most destructive pests & are said to cause more damage to homes than fire, storms and floods combined!
That’s why annual Timber Pest Inspections are so important for homeowners.
Bees are a very common pest to encounter during the summer months as they get hard at work pollinating flowers.
During spring each year, many bee colonies split into two. This is their way of reproducing into larger groups. The original queen leaves the hive with most of the workers (often thousands of individuals) in a swarm to find a suitable location to start a new hive. Usually they will temporarily rest in a clump nearby until a permanent site can be found.
Sometimes their location of choice is less than ideal for us, school grounds, gardens or roof spaces etc. The team at Termico Pest Management work where possible to relocate bees to a safe location so they can continue their important work.
Probably one of the more annoying summer pests. As soon as the weather heats up they come out in force. Flies are are also a major carrier of disease. They are known to transfer more than 100 pathogens that can result in illness, including cholera, typhoid, tuberculosis, and dysentery. They collect those pathogens on their legs and mouths when feeding on rubbish, faeces and other decaying material.
Another flying pest, however this one has been hailed as one of the deadliest of all insects on the planet. Hot, humid summer days provide the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. So when you’re out in the evenings its best to cover up and keep some mosquito spray on hand.
