Termites in Government

8 Oct. 2015

Recently the ABC caused a stir in the media by publishing an article reporting on a termite infestation in WA's Parliament House. The ABC reported that the termite damage was significant with extensive repairs necessary and was expected to cost at least $50,000.

"Termites have left a $50,000 damage bill at WA's Parliament House, with extensive repair works planned for later this year to fix a trail of destruction."

According to the ABC, a Parliamentary Services' annual report revealed substantial termite damage to the Legislative Assembly chamber. "While the termites have since been eradicated, a stairwell and the sub-frame below much of the Assembly seating area will have to be replaced."

This is simply a tragedy. The fact that any termite damage has occurred in a Perth building that is more than 100 years old is simply poor asset management. One can only imagine what irreparable damage could have happened if left for even longer.

The article stated "timber construction combining with high moisture levels to create conditions dubbed a "perfect storm" for termites."

Full repairs can't go ahead until the end of the parliamentary year to avoid disruptions.

"While the final cost for repairs has not yet been determined, the Parliamentary Services Department conceded it was likely to exceed $50,000."

Readers of our blog would be fully versed on the high importance that Termico place on regular termite inspections. One would think those in charge of the maintenance of government buildings, in particular the older historical variety, would be aware of the threat of termites damage also. "The affected area is now being inspected regularly to ensure the termites do not return, while other parts of the building are also being monitored."

A regular Termico Termite Inspection can save you thousands of dollars in costly repairs by detecting any termite activity BEFORE major damage is done.

Don't leave it to chance! Chances are - you will have termites near and around your home. 1 in 5 homes in WA suffer some sort of termite attack and the likelihood of termites invading your home in Perth is high.
