Damaged caused by termites is not covered by home and contents insurance which is one of the reasons why annual Timber Pest Inspections for your home are so important.
As Perth’s leader in termite barriers and pest inspections there is a good chance you have been visited by one of our technicians for a Timber Pest Inspection at one time or another. If however you haven’t had an inspection completed at your home before, here is what you can expect!
Firstly we often hear people refer to the inspection as a ‘termite inspection’ as termites are one of the main pests which cause concern for homeowners. However while this pest is extremely destructive and is said to cause more damage to homes than fire, floods and storms combined, it’s not the only pest we’re looking for when inspecting your home. During a Timber Pest Inspection we are looking for signs of all Timber Pests this includes:
• Active termite activity
• Inactive visible evidence of termite activity
• Borers (including European House Borers)
• Fungal decay/wood rot
• Conditions conducive to termite attack
When booking with us we will give you the opportunity to select a day & time that best suits you. We all have busy lives and know it’s not practical to be waiting around all day for a trade’s person to arrive, so we will give you an hour arrival window in which our technician will attend your property.
Upon their arrival an inspection normally takes about an hour. If however you have a property larger than a standard 4x2 or a lot of out-buildings that require an inspection please note more time will be required.
On booking your inspection make sure to take advantage of our range of pest control treatments. You will receive amazing discounts on pest treatments carried out on the same day as your inspection. These need to be booked in advance to ensure the technician is allocated enough time to carry out all treatments required.
If you happen to forget to mark your inspection date in your diary then don’t worry we have you covered! A reminder text message will be sent out to you a couple of days before your scheduled appointment.
Our Pest Control Technician will turn up on time & will put on boot covers before entering your home to protect your floors. They will then explain what they are going to do and if you have chosen to have any pest treatments carried out they will go through any safety information you need to be aware of.
They will then proceed to carry out a full inspection of both the interior and exterior of your home. This includes looking in drawers, cupboards, pantries, garages, sheds/outbuildings and in the roof space.
While in the roof we will request that the power along with any solar systems on the property are turned off. This is to ensure the safety of our technicians and is a legal requirement set out by Work Safe. On exiting the roof space our technician will clean the manhole cover to ensure it’s free from any dirty marks and will give you the go ahead to turn the power back on.
Depending on the construction of your home you may notice the technician using a tapping stick.
The tapping stick is used to listen for hollow sounds in timber, which might reveal termite galleries that are not noticeable on the outside but can be significant inside the timbers.
The technician will also be on the lookout for mud workings which termites use to protect themselves and to keep themselves from drying out. Mudding is the most common evidence that reveals their presence. It’s only when mudding or timber is broken open that we see live termite activity.
In addition the technician will also be looking for conditions that are conducive to termites so they can make recommendations to you about what prevention actions you can take to reduce the risk of termite activity. For example, not having timber in contact with the ground and keeping the perimeter of the house dry by fixing any plumbing leaks etc
Once the inspection has been completed our technician will inform you of any areas of concern they have identified & will talk you through our warranty.
Note if active termites are identified on the property we can normally spot treat these on the day and then arrange for our customer service team to arrange additional treatments and inspections where required.
Our Technician will finialise the Timber Pest Inspection report & your report along with any warranty documents will be issued out to you the following working day.
If active termites have been detected inside your home then you will also be contacted by one of our customer service team to arrange any additional treatments and inspections that may be required.
As recommended by Consumer Protection it is important to have your home inspected for termites at least once a year. We have you covered here too as once you become a Termico customer we will issue you out a reminder each year when your home is due for its annual Timber Pest Inspection!
