Spring is here and the termites are ready to fight or take flight!

3 Sep. 2018

The cold days of winter made us all a bit lethargic  but now that Spring is here, things are starting to ramp up in the nest. Mum has been laying lots of Alate eggs; they are the reproductive caste that leave the nest and try to start new colonies somewhere else. Warm still air is best for them and we are coming up to a good time of year for that. Its time to get a little action in and everything is in preparation for another colonising flight.

There is also a Sub Caste called Neotenics – they stay in the nest and are able to develop  into Kings and Queens, but they only do that  if the primary King or Queen die or get separated from the colony. Then the Neotenics fight each other to see which one will take over. Well my sisters look cute in their braces and boots and I’ll be getting in line for a ring side seat to see the fight for Mums place in the colony. Uh Hum, I mean heaven forbid that something should happen to the poor woman. Just Saying!
